Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 3 Coastal Sketches, comprising a drawing of riverbank scene (fair condition, tear to right edge, creasing, toning and minor foxing to paper, loss to upper right corner with visible old mounting residue on verso), light house with some text inscription on drawing (minor foxing, toning, pen inscription on verso with some mat burn), and rustic landscape view with house, pen dated '1933' lower right (poor restored condition, foxing, toning and mat burn with several losses to corners and edges); all unframed. Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of light house 9 1/4 in. x Width: 11 3/4 in.
