Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr and Sr, 2 Oil Studies and Pastel Drawing, comprising two oil studies on boards by Christopher P.H. Murpy (Sav, 1869-1939), including study of a sitting boy with illegible inscription lower right, and study of a seated figure with lamp (both poor condition, losses to paint throughout, wear and aging to boards); and a pastel drawing of a statuette on balcony at Telfair Museum by Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973) with inscription 'At Telfair Academy' on verso (poor condition, wear to board, pin holes to edges and corners); all unframed. Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections. Christopher P. H. Murphy was a prominent Savannah artist in the 19th and 20th century. Though he had no formal artistic training his work was exhibited at the Fourth Annual Exhibition of American Art in New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Cincinnati Art Museum, Washington Watercolor Club, and Southern States Art League, among others.Measurements: Height: of the board of pastel 14 in. x Width: 11 in.
