Círculo de François Gérard (1770–1837)

French School, First half of the 19th century (c. 1820 - 1840) / Romantic Period Title of the work: Romantic portrait of an elegant lady in a pink dress in the garden (Portrait romantique d'une élégante au jardin) Artist: French School (Circle of Romantic/genre painters) Era: First half of the 19th century (c. 1820 - 1840) / Romantic Period Technique: Oil on canvas (Original period canvas) Condition: Good – with typical signs of aging and a very attractive antique patina. Exhibits slight, stable craquelure appropriate to its age. Signature: Not visible / Unsigned (Cataloged by rigorous analysis of style and costume) Sold with frame: molded and gilded wooden frame with a black mat (included as courtesy). Exquisite oil on canvas from the French School dated to the first half of the 19th century (c. 1820-1840), in full bloom of the Romantic period. The piece depicts a Parisian high-society lady in a bucolic setting, offering a valuable testimony of the fashion and taste of the era. The model wears a refined satin pink dress with an ornamented bodice and the iconic gigot-style puff sleeves (or mameluke), finished with long white undersleeves and a high updo, elements of attire strictly characteristic of the 1820s and 1830s. The technical execution stands out for its delicacy: the features, jewelry, and the complex textures of the satin fabric display the rigor of French classicism, while the garden background and surrounding vegetation are resolved with freer, more suggestive brushwork that anticipates 19th-century naturalism. The palette of pastel tones and the lyrical atmosphere are typical of the French artistic salons of the period. A piece of great historical value, elegance, and excellent pictorial quality, ideal for collectors of Old Master paintings. Circle of François Gérard (Romantic-Courtly Style) Why it fits: François Gérard (1770–1837) was the quintessential portraitist of the French aristocracy and the high bourgeoisie during the Empire and the Restoration. His portraits of ladies stand out for the smoothness of the skin, the satin shine of the dresses, and the elegant outdoor poses. Bibliography: Leni, Elmar (1999).
