Even in ancient times, the signet ring was an important personal symbol; in addition to its representative function, it served primarily to affix a personal seal to documents and seals. For many centuries, such rings were closely associated with social rank, office, and wealth. In particular, coats of arms and other personal emblems made the signet ring a visible expression of lineage and social standing. The ring in question is also a signet ring of this kind. The setting and the floral shoulders, crafted from 10-karat gold, hold a polished, oval disc of heliotrope. Against a dark green background, the stone displays the characteristic red inclusions that have been associated with the blood of Christ since the Middle Ages. The English name “bloodstone” derives from this belief, while in German it is occasionally referred to as “Blutjaspis.” Due to its hardness and fine-grained structure, heliotrope is particularly good for carving intaglios and has been used as a gemstone since ancient times. Even the stone’s surface, which remains unadorned here, was originally intended to be engraved with a coat of arms, monogram, or other personal symbol. However, it possesses a special charm precisely in its simple form. The deep green of the heliotrope and the warm colour of the gold lend this ring, crafted c. 1910, a dignified and timeless appearance. A true classic, presumably crafted in the United States.
