CLIFFORD POSSUM TJAPALTJARRI, Ngulta (Bush Cabbage Dreaming), 1977

CLIFFORD POSSUM TJAPALTJARRI Anmatyerre language, c.1932 - 2002 Ngulta (Bush Cabbage Dreaming), 1977 acrylic on masonite 46 x 31 cm; 47 x 32 cm (framed) bears inscription verso: CP771150 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Northern Territory, Cat No. CP771150 Private Collection, United States of America Private Collection, Victoria Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists Painted in 1977, this work belongs to the formative years of Clifford Possums Tjapaltjarri whose name is inseparable from the Papunya Tula movement, the Anmatyerre country of Napperby and from the Possum Dreaming. The painting depicts the Ngulta, or Bush Cabbage Dreaming at the site of the same name. Ngulta is a plant approximately one meter high, found in creekbeds and near water sources across Warlpiri, Anmatyerre and Luritja country. Its significance extends well beyond sustenance. The continued performance of ceremonies associated with the Ngulta narrative is understood to ensure the maintenance of good supplies of this food in the region, so that the painting participates in an ongoing obligation of care for country rather than simply recording a story. The plant is shown emanating from its growth centre, with the fruit represented at the ends of sinuous lines that carry the eye outward from the source. © CLIFFORD POSSUM TJAPALTJARRI / Copyright Agency, 2026
