Collector’s spiral snail: Lyria cloveriana (84 mm

Scientific name: Lyria cloveriana (Weaver, 1963) – named in honor of the famous American conchologist Phillip W. Clover. In German-speaking regions it is also listed as Clover whelk or Lyre-walzen snail. Origin & Localities: South Sri Lanka; this exquisite specimen comes precisely from the near-shore depths off Tangalla (often written Tangalle), one of the most well-known type localities for this endemic species. Habitat: A predatory gastropod, endemic to Sri Lanka, living on sandy to muddy seafloors at moderate depths of 20 to 80 meters. The shells are usually selectively recovered as bycatch from shallow-water nets used by local fishermen. Size & Condition: 84 mm – An impressive large form! While the typical average length of this species is about 70 to 75 mm, a specimen over 80 mm already ranks among the sought-after, stately showpieces on the international collector market. Condition GEM (Absolute museum- and top-quality): perfectly preserved, knobby orange-red Apex (protoconch), a flawless, bulging body whorl without the otherwise common net scratches or feeding/gnaw marks, and an intensely developed, high-contrast zigzag and longitudinal stripe pattern.
