Collins & Co. Legitimus No. 18 Bowie Knife, V-44 Style, with Tooled

Collins & Co. Legitimus No. 18 Bowie Knife, V-44 Style, with Tooled

North America, United States, Connecticut, Collins & Co. A heavy Bowie knife made by Collins & Co. as its No. 18 pattern. The ricasso is stamped "COLLINS & CO LEGITIMUS MADE IN U.S.A. No. 18." The broad steel blade has a clip point and a slightly recurved belly, with the upper edge of the clip partly sharpened and a pair of narrow fullers running down the flat. A brass double guard with ball-shaped quillons protects the hand. The black wood grip is fixed with brass pins and ends in a hooked pommel that keeps the hand from slipping in a hard chop. This blade form is the one collectors know as the V-44, a knife linked to American military aviation survival kits and to service in the Pacific during the Second World War. The knife comes with a brown leather sheath with a belt loop, tooled with scrolling foliate panels and stamped with a number. The Collins Company was founded in 1826 by the brothers Samuel Watkinson Collins and David Collins and their cousin William Wells. They set up on the Farmington River in Canton, Connecticut, and the village around the works was later renamed Collinsville. The firm began with axes and grew into one of the largest edge-tool makers in the world. Its range came to include machetes, hatchets, adzes, brush hooks, picks, shovels, plows, knives, swords, and bayonets. Collins machetes sold so well in Central and South America that the brand name became a common word for the tool itself. The company also ran plants in several Latin American countries. "Legitimus," the trademark struck on this blade, was a quality mark the firm used for many years. During the Second World War, Collins supplied more than a million machetes to the United States military. The Collinsville factory closed in 1966, about 140 years after it opened. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205939
