Coran (juzʾ) - 4 feuillets Coran sourate 78

Ancient manuscript Qur'an – 4 simple leaflets recto-verso – 8 handwritten pages Originating from a Qur'an on detached leaves. 17 cm × 12 cm. Probable period: second half of the 17th century to first half of the 19th century. Circa 1750–1850.. 4 simple recto-verso handwritten leaflets, i.e., 8 handwritten pages, coming from the same ancient Arabic Qur'anic manuscript preserved in detached-leaf form. The set comes from a part of a Qur’an (juzʾ) and contains several identifiable surahs. Among the passages formally recognized on the leaflets are notably surah al-Mulk (الملك, surah 67) as well as the final surahs of the Qur’an, including al-Ikhlāṣ (الإخلاص, 112), al-Falaq (الفلق, 113) and al-Nās (الناس, 114). The Qur’anic text is copied in Arabic in a large, regular, very legible calligraphy in black ink, abundantly vocalized and punctuated with auxiliary signs. The titles and indications related to the surahs are rubricated in red-orange ink, as well as some signs of reading and separation. The written surface is delineated by a poly-chrome manuscript frame with several borders, mainly red-orange and black, occasionally with a blue-green border. The changes of surahs are particularly decorative, their title, traditional classification and number of verses may be inscribed in red before the basmala, بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful. Provenance of the leaf surface This leaf comes from a set of handwritten leaves. The leaves were contained in a flapped folder of a binding type posterior to the leaves with an old catalog card in Arabic which allows documenting their identification and chronological attribution. It bears notably: اسم الكتاب : جزء من القرآن الكريم Ism al-kitāb: Juzʾ min al-Qurʾān al-Karīm Book name: a part of the Noble Qur’an. The field reserved for the name of the copyist (اسم الكاتب) is not filled in. The card then indicates: تاريخ الكتابة : القرن العاشر الهجري Tārīkh al-kitāba: al-qarn al-ʿāshir al-hijrī Date of copying: 10th century AH. 4 simple recto-verso leaflets from an Arabic Qur’anic manuscript. Set of 8 handwritten Qur’anic pages The passages cover notably the end of surah 78, An-Nabaʾ (“The News”), surah 79, An-Nāziʿāt (“Those who wrench [the truth]”), as well as the beginning of surah 80, ʿAbasa (“He Frowned”). The content mainly addresses the Resurrection, the Day of Judgment, Paradise and Hell, as well as the story of Moses before Pharaoh. Two beginnings of surahs are particularly highlighted by red rubrics and the Basmala. *Conservation tips, as it is very fragile.
