Alla auktioner / Konst & Grafik / Corneille (1922-2010) - Figuur

This lithograph by Corneille, signed and dated 1999 and numbered 57/200, shows a stylized human figure with outstretched arms against an intense blue background and a bright yellow landscape. The figure is constructed from strong black lines and geometric shapes, with particular attention drawn to the face, the striking hairstyle, and the red-pink accents in the clothing. The simplified forms and the strong color contrast give the work a spontaneous, almost childlike appearance. The open posture of the figure simultaneously conveys a sense of movement and freedom, characteristics that fit well with Corneille’s expressive visual language. Corneille was the artist's name of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), born in Liège and one of the leading Dutch artists connected to the CoBrA movement. Along with, among others, Karel Appel and Constant, he belonged to the experimental artists who after World War II sought a free and spontaneous way of making art. Corneille drew inspiration from, among other things, children's drawings, nature, people, and his many travels. Later he developed a highly recognizable, colorful visual language in which women, birds, and celestial bodies frequently appear. In addition to paintings and drawings, he produced a lot of graphics, through which his work became known to a wide audience.
