CRAVEN (John) — 200 Million Americans, or America in the 196 - Lot 70

CRAVEN (John) — 200 Million Americans, or America in the 1960s Paris, Galerie Berthet-Aittouarès, 2002. Exhibition catalog, large quarto, paperback, black-and-white photographic cover, numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions. Bilingual text in French and English. Catalog of the exhibition dedicated to John Craven’s American photographs, titled 200 Million Americans or America in the Sixties. Bibliographic records confirm that it was printed in Paris in 2002, with texts by Iliana Kasarska and Edmonde Charles-Roux. John Craven (1912–1981), whose real name was Louis Conte, was a photographer, filmmaker, and gallery owner. His book *200 Million Americans*, published by Hachette in 1968, won the Prix Nadar that same year. This 2002 catalog focuses specifically on that American series. The photographs featured in your copy—Chicago architecture, the election campaign in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, leisure activities, and entertainment—provide a very good sense of this photo essay on 1960s America: a documentary perspective, yet often with highly graphic composition and a touch of irony. Interest in Craven, moreover, appears to be undergoing a reappraisal: the Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery, which still represents him, dedicated a new exhibition to his industrial work in 2020–2021 and has included him again in its 2026 photography program. A very fine copy. The glossy cover shows only a few scuffs and minor signs of wear; the corners are slightly worn in places. The interior appears particularly fresh and clean. The cover is very well done.
