1994, constructed by Mike Smith, a welded steel chair with bedpan seat, featured in Damien Hirst's short film '100% Weird', 48cm wide, 55cm deep, 191cm high, The early part of Damien Hirst’s career was loaded with subversion and intrigue. In the 1990s, Hirst and his fellow Young British Artists sought to shake the establishment to its very core and blur the lines of what could and couldn’t be considered art. In 1994, Hirst wrote and directed a 60-second commercial titled '100% Weird' for the cable television network TNT UK. The advert followed a man and his pet canary taking a walk to the butchers, alongside a plethora of surreal and strange imagery such as a group of eyeless men playing cards whilst a skinned, dead cow fell to the floor. Another scene portrayed a man on a high-rise chair defecating a kidney bean, and a businessman sporting a pair of earrings, played by none other than the godfather of Punk himself, Malcolm McLaren, who also composed the music for the advert. The initial feedback from TNT at the time was very positive and they had planned to show the footage in cinemas as well as brief clips on television; however, it was eventually cut from public view on the grounds of the imagery being deemed inappropriate. The high-rise chair featured in this advert was constructed by London-based sculptor Mike Smith and features a bold and austere, brutalist welded steel frame with elongated legs and a commode seat which feels as if it could only inhabit the world of '100% Weird'.
