De Smet, Peter - 1 Original preliminary page - voor De...

Peter de Smet (1944 - 2003) is one of the most prominent and original humorists in the Dutch comic world, and in 1985 he was awarded the Stripschap Prize. With his characteristic humor and drawing style he influenced many cartoonists. In 2015 the Stripschap named its audience award for Dutch comic albums after Peter de Smet. His career as a comic-strip artist took off in 1971 when, on the recommendation of Jan Kruis, he began publishing De Generaal in the magazine Pep. De Generaal was, from the first episode in Pep no. 29 (10-16 July 1971), an immediate hit! Soon his creator found his formula for success. Each episode was built around the same gimmick. The main character, simply called 'The General', wants to seize power, represented by 'The Fort', which is occupied by 'The Marshal'. The General's army consists of one unmotivated soldier and a professor. The professor constantly invents new disguises and vehicles that are intended to bring the general's master plan to fruition. Shortly after De Generaal, De Smet started 'Joris P.K', a medieval adventure strip in the style of Peyo's 'Johan and Peewit' but to which De Smet added his own quirky humor. Between 1972 and 1974 De Smet drew four stories of this series for Pep, then in 1974-1975 two more for Nieuwe Revu and in 1986 one more for Eppo. Wordt Vervolgd in 1986. De Generaal, but especially Joris P.K., are regarded by connoisseurs as among the Dutch masterworks. This lot contains a beautiful, very early, fully developed page for De Generaal from the early period of Peter de Smet. Very rare work. Ready to ink. Original, early sketches. De Generaal is very rare and is offered almost never. Peter de Smet usually threw this material away. This page by this virtuoso has luckily been preserved. Before this wonderful page is offered now, it has been kept in a private collection for more than 45 years. A unique opportunity for the connoisseur. See also the photos that form part of the description and give a good impression of this unique page. This beautiful page will be shipped to the new owner with maximum-protection packaging.
