Decorative ornament - BORLAMP Garage Bramante Milano –...

BORLAMP – Garage Bramante, Milano – Patented Central Automotive Spotlight – Italy – circa 1920s A rare and highly decorative surviving example of early Italian automotive lighting, this original BORLAMP spotlight carries its period brass badge marked: BORLAMP – GARAGE BRAMANTE – BREVETTATO – MILANO Borlamp spotlights are documented in specialist pre-war automotive sources as central automotive spotlights dating from the 1920s. A surviving reference to a 1929 Borlamp catalogue describes this type of lamp as frequently mounted individually at the front of a motor car, including in front of the radiator, where it served as an auxiliary directional light. PreWarCar This makes the present object not simply a decorative vintage lamp, but a genuine piece of early Italian automobilia, dating from the pioneering period when vehicle lighting was still constructed as a separate mechanical and optical accessory. The design is particularly striking. The rear housing has an elegant torpedo / projectile-shaped profile executed in copper, while the front section combines metal, glass and a complex articulated optical assembly. The large rounded copper shell gives the lamp an unusually sculptural appearance, while the mechanical front assembly clearly reflects its functional automotive origin. The lamp is mounted on its original articulated support and retains the broad fixing bracket with elongated mounting holes, allowing it to be secured to the vehicle structure. The lamp body can be positioned and adjusted after mounting. One of the most distinctive features is the small hinged auxiliary lens positioned at the front. Comparable surviving Borlamp lamps are also documented with an adjustable or movable lens. Its purpose appears to have been to alter the optical behaviour of the spotlight by changing or concentrating the projected beam. As I have not found original Borlamp technical instructions describing the exact optical effect of this particular lens, I prefer not to assign it a more specific function such as fog light, dipped beam or anti-dazzle device. The optical section is enclosed by a substantial glass element, while the metallic front assembly includes the original adjustment mechanisms. The combination of copper, brass-coloured mounting components, metal and glass gives this object an exceptional visual character today. It has the appearance of an early piece of industrial sculpture while remaining recognisably an authentic automotive component. Electrical test Because no original voltage rating is clearly visible on the lamp, it was not connected directly to mains electricity or to an assumed automotive voltage. For testing purposes I used a regulated laboratory DC power supply and gradually powered the lamp conservatively at: 5.00 V DC During the test the lamp drew approximately: 3.7–3.8 A corresponding to approximately: 18.5–19 W The internal lamp illuminated correctly and produced a strong warm incandescent light. The purpose of the test was only to confirm electrical operation while avoiding unnecessary stress to an almost century-old component. The lamp was not tested at a higher voltage, since its original nominal voltage has not been definitively established. A video showing the actual operating test can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/d_WD9oRJKzc The video forms an important part of the description and shows the lamp operating at 5.00 V DC using the regulated power supply. Dimensions Height: approximately 17 cm Width across mounting bracket: approximately 12 cm Depth: approximately 20 cm Weight: approximately 800 g Condition The spotlight is preserved in attractive original vintage condition, showing wear, oxidation, patina, scratches and signs of age consistent with an automotive accessory approaching one century old. The copper housing retains a beautiful naturally aged surface and has not been aggressively polished. Metal parts show normal oxidation and wear. The glass and optical components are present as photographed. The articulated mechanical components and front movable lens are present. Please carefully review all photographs, as they form an integral part of the description and show the condition, surface wear and construction in detail. Historical context During the 1920s automotive lighting was still evolving rapidly. Additional lamps, spotlights and centrally mounted lamps were frequently fitted externally rather than integrated into the car body. Specialist pre-war automotive documentation records Borlamp central spotlights from the 1920s, including an example referenced to a 1929 catalogue and described as often being mounted as a single central lamp. PreWarCar Objects of this kind therefore belong equally to the history of early motoring, automotive engineering and industrial design. Today, the sculptural copper body and exposed optical mechanism make this Borlamp particularly attractive not only to collectors of pre-war cars and automobilia, but also to collectors of early industrial design and mechanical objects. This is an original vintage object and is sold in the condition clearly shown in the photographs. The lamp has been tested only as described above at 5.00 V DC. No claim is made regarding the original nominal operating voltage. No power supply is included. The buyer should have any permanent electrical installation or automotive installation checked by a qualified technician. Colours and surface appearance may vary slightly depending on screen settings and lighting conditions. The object will be carefully packed with protective materials and shipped with tracking. By placing a bid, the buyer confirms that they have reviewed the complete description, all photographs and the operating video.
