Delheid Frères Walking stick - .800 silver, Ebony - Antique walking stick

An exceptional and historically significant Belgian antique walking cane from the Art Nouveau era (circa 1900). This piece is not only a beautiful example of high-quality Belgian silversmithing, but also a fascinating artefact from European music history. - The grip/knob: Executed in the classical Derby style, beautifully decorated with organic Art Nouveau floral motifs and relief. On the cuff is a finely engraved monogram "HM". - The inscription: Deeply hand-engraved with "Harmonie de Volksvrienden". Recent archival research links this walking cane directly to the historic crisis within the royal brass band in Berchem (Antwerp) around the turn of the century. The initials "HM" belong to M. Heirman, a prominent member of the association whose signature has been preserved on the historical protest letter from 1900 to the board. - Silversmith & hallmarks: The silver sleeve is stamped with the prestigious master mark of Delheid Frères (Brussels, founded 1828), recognizable by the iconic "D under a serpent". It also bears the fineness mark "800" for pure silver. - The cane: Made of high-quality, dense ebony with a beautiful natural grain, complete with the original butt/end cap at the bottom. In excellent antique condition, appropriate for its age and use. The silver knob has a gorgeous authentic patina with very sharp engravings and clear hallmarks. The ebony cane is sturdy, straight and shows no cracks. A museum-quality object for collectors of walking canes, Art Nouveau silver, or Belgian history.
