Delicate Art Deco Bracelet with Diamonds in Platinum on Gold, c. 1920

Cool, elegant, and somewhat otherworldly—jewellery from the early 20th century was characterized by a level of craftsmanship never before seen. The introduction of the precious metal platinum—which was initially applied only in thin layers over gold—allowed for exceptionally meticulous details and a brilliant white appearance. It is precisely this design language that we see in the bracelet presented here. The design widens in the center and features nine diamonds, one in an old-cut style and eight in a rose cut style. Small milgrains frame the diamonds, which are set within delicately serrated ornaments. To the left and right of the centerpiece, small diamond roses transition into the narrow band. This band is also plated with platinum on the top, so that when viewed from above, it gleams in a cool white. Only on the sides is the bracelet visible in gold and adorned with fine floral engravings, which reveal the goldsmith’s high standards down to the smallest detail. The details of the craftsmanship, the diamond cuts, and the combination of materials reveal that the bracelet was created at the beginning of the 20th century. With its delicate yet linear design, it stands at the threshold between the ethereal elegance of the Belle Époque and the clean geometry of Art Deco.
