DENMARK. 2 Speciedaler, 1600. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU

Majestic Double Speciedaler of Immense Rarity DENMARK. 2 Speciedaler, 1600. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU Details--Reverse Rim Damage. Dav-8233; Hede-47; Sieg-97.2; Harck-4.10; Schou-1; Bruun-4632. Weight: 69.63 gms. Engraved by Nicolaus Schwabe. A truly majestic piece with speckles of green and purple in the legend. Of the utmost rarity and importance. The only other example to have appeared on the market was also from the Bruun Collection (Duplicate Sale, 1925, lot 1760). This type was originally struck to commemorate the king's wedding to Anna Catherine, daughter of Margrave Friedrich of Brandenburg, on 27 November 1597. It is clearly visible that the date was altered in the die, while the obverse was struck from a different die. At nearly 20% above the statutory weight, the present example was likely intended as a presentation piece, especially since no other heavy specimens are known to exist. Estimate: €20,000 - €25,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT. Buyers which are non-VAT registered entities or individuals who take delivery of lots within EU countries subject to margin scheme taxation will be invoiced a VAT charge and a Buyer’s Premium for a total of 27.5% based upon the total amount of the hammer.
