DENMARK. Royal Lineage Restrike Silver Medal, ND (1513). Hans. NGC MS-64.

DENMARK. Royal Lineage Restrike Silver Medal, ND (1513). Hans. NGC MS-64. Galster-257; Lange-107; JS-665; Bruun-15582. Diameter: 53 mm. Weight: 78 gms. By Christian Wineke, the Younger (W). Exquisite portrait medal; the uncirculated and intricate details of the king's armor are beautifully highlighted by a soft, golden toning. Christian Wineke's Royal Lineage Portraits Series consists of 10 medals of the kings of the House of Oldenburg, from Christian I to Frederik IV. All have a portrait obverse and a text reverse. The dies were cut 1729-30 and the first set struck 1731. Later, medalists Arbien and Wolff/Adzer added kings Christian VI and Frederik V to the series. The portraits on the medals for King Hans and Christian I were inadvertently switched by the medalist, Christian Wineke the Younger. Relying on Albert Haelwegh's historical copper engravings - which derived from the Kronborg Tapestries of the 1580s - Wineke accidentally transposed the images during the transfer to the medal dies. Consequently, the medal of King Hans depicts his father, Christian I, while the medal of Christian I features the portrait of King Hans. Estimate: €1,000 - €1,500. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT.
