French edition, translated by Jacques Gengoux, of Elisabeth Dhanens’s major monograph on Hubert and Jan van Eyck. An in-depth study of the Van Eyck brothers’ work and their role in the emergence of 15th-century Flemish painting. The author compares the works with historical and documentary sources and naturally gives central attention to the Ghent Altarpiece, its attribution, and the respective contributions of Hubert and Jan.
