Dominicus Aulisius - Commentariorum Juris Civilis ad Titulos Pandectarum - 1776

Domenico Aulisio (1649–1717) – Commentarii ad Titulos Pandectarum – Naples, Giuseppe De Lieto, 1776 – Second Edition – 3 volumes Important eighteenth-century work of Roman law by the Neapolitan jurist Domenico Aulisio (Dominicus Aulisius), professor of law at the University of Naples and a figure in the intellectual milieu in which Giambattista Vico operated. Second and last edition, published in Naples in 1776, markedly expanded compared to the first edition of 1719–1720, which comprised two volumes. The work constitutes an extensive commentary on the titles of the Pandects, or Digest of Justinian, and addresses numerous aspects of Roman civil law, including possession, obligations, donations, successions, legacies and fideicommissa. Bibliographic data: Author: Domenico Aulisio (Dominicus Aulisius) Title: Commentariorum Juris Civilis ad Titulos Pandectarum Place: Naples (Neapoli) Publisher: Giuseppe De Lieto (Expensis Josephi de Lieto) Year: 1776 (MDCCLXXVI) Edition: second edition Language: Latin Format: quarto Volumes: 3, numbered I, II and III Pagination: volume I, 249 pages; volume II, 487 pages; volume III, 650 pages. Characteristics: Text predominantly laid out in two columns, with large copper-engraved vignettes on the title pages. The title page of the first volume presents printing in red and black. Old bindings in parchment with spine labels bearing the title and volume numbers. Condition: Conditions in keeping with the age of the work. The bindings show abrasions, stains, wear and damage to the ends of the spines, particularly evident in the first two volumes. The pages show browning, halos and occasional stains. There are ancient handwritten annotations, also near the title pages. Readers are invited to examine the photographs carefully, which form an integral part of the description. Bibliographic note: Uncommon work of Neapolitan legal literature of the eighteenth century. The first edition appeared in 1719–1720; this second edition of 1776 was subsequently reissued in 1783. A specimen of interest to antique-book collectors, scholars of Roman law, and enthusiasts of the history of Italian legal culture.
