Don Shoemaker (American/Mexican, 1919-1990), Rosewood and Leather

Circa 1960s, low scissor-framed sling chair featuring black leather fastened with rows of studs under carved wood covers, appears unmarked. 27 x 23.5 x 28 in. Don holds immense architectural and historical significance as a cornerstone of mid-century Mexican Modernism. While born in America, Shoemaker's relocation to Mexico in the late 1940s transformed him into one of the country's most celebrated designers. His work seamlessly merged the clean, geometric tenets of international mid-century modern design with traditional Mexican craftsmanship and the country's unparalleled natural resources. Today, his pieces are highly sought after by global collectors for their organic fluidity, unique engineering, and exceptional materiality Original leather shows wear, drop of glue-substance to seat; missing one wooden joint peg at crest rail; break and repair to wood joint at left and right sides; missing two decorative wooden nail covers.
