Door knocker - 18th century

It is a Gothic forged door knocker, an antique piece most likely from the 17th century or even earlier, that preserves all the signals of authenticity typical of a item that came from a Spanish convent: hand-worked iron, deep patina, honest wear, and above all the mason marks of the blacksmith, those minimal but unmistakable traces that reveal the strike, the rhythm, and the technique of traditional craft. Here the forge does not seek complacent beauty: it seeks strength, function, and character. The two curved blades, sturdy and slightly asymmetrical, show manual work without industrial molds. The iron, dark and rough, retains the original texture of fire and hammer, with small irregularities that are precisely what certify its age. In the joining area one can see those linear and dotted marks that betray the smith’s fit, the closure of the hot metal, and the final adjustment of the blow. The form, austere and forceful, fully fits the late Gothic and proto-Gothic tradition of convents and religious houses: pieces made to last, to resist centuries of use, and to convey a severe, almost monastic presence. There is no superfluous decoration; beauty lies in the honesty of the iron and in the history it carries. It is a knocker that did not merely open doors: it announced a world. Each blacksmith’s mark is a fragment of that ancient, silent, disciplined world. Certified shipping and good packaging.
