DOUG & CHARLOTTE VIGIL SAN ILDEFONSO REDWARE POTTERY JAR

Doug Vigil (Born 1954) & Charlotte Vigil San Ildefonso Redware Pottery Jar. Hand-painted with an Avanyu (water serpent), encircling the shoulder of the jar. Doug Vigil is a San Ildefonso Pueblo artist from a family with a longstanding history in Pueblo pottery and painting. He is the son of potters Albert Vigil (1927–2009) and Josephine Vigil (1927–2001), both of whom worked within the pottery traditions of San Ildefonso Pueblo. Vigil is the grandson of painter Romando Vigil, a member of the San Ildefonso School of watercolor artists. Romando Vigil was among a generation of Pueblo painters whose work documented traditional subjects, figures, animals, and aspects of Pueblo life through works on paper. He is also the great-nephew of noted San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez, whose pottery, particularly her black-on-black wares, became widely recognized during the 20th century and contributed to increased national and international interest in Pueblo ceramics. Doug Vigil's family background connects him to several generations of San Ildefonso artists working in pottery and painting, providing historical and artistic context for his work within the broader tradition of Pueblo art.
