Duck decoy - Large French Hand-Carved & Hand-Painted...

Beautiful and highly decorative French hand-carved and hand-painted wooden duck, dating from the second half of the 20th century. An exceptionally attractive interpretation of the traditional hunting decoy, modelled as a male Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), immediately recognisable by its deep emerald-green head, contrasting pale neck ring and warm brown breast. The piece is particularly striking for the quality and complexity of its construction. The substantial wooden body is complemented by separately carved and overlapping wings and an elaborate multi-layered tail, creating considerable depth and giving the bird a remarkably sculptural appearance. The entire surface has been decorated by hand, with great attention to the individual plumage. The feathers are represented through carefully painted overlapping patterns in shades of brown, grey, cream, black and green. Particularly beautiful is the intense emerald-green decoration of the head and tail, enriched with fine dark brushwork that creates an almost iridescent effect. The broad sculpted bill, expressive painted eyes and finely detailed plumage give the duck considerable character. The carving combines the recognisable features of a Mallard with a distinctive folk-art interpretation. Dimensions: approximately 32 × 16 × 12 cm. The duck is preserved in very good original condition, with no significant damage, cracks or visible restorations. It retains its beautiful original painted surface and authentic patina, with only minor traces of age and light wear to some exposed edges, entirely consistent with its period and clearly visible in the photographs. A particularly decorative and characterful example of French folk-inspired craftsmanship, combining the tradition of the carved hunting decoy with a sophisticated and highly detailed decorative execution. A beautiful collector's piece, equally appealing as a decorative sculpture, folk-art object or addition to a collection of vintage wooden hunting decoys
