Duck decoy - Vintage Wooden Duck Decoy – Hand-Carved...

Charming Vintage Wooden Duck Decoy – Red-Headed Duck – Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted – Circa 1950s–1960s Beautiful and highly decorative vintage wooden duck decoy, traditionally hand-carved and hand-painted, featuring a striking red head, deep green wings and a wonderfully preserved aged patina. Dating approximately from the 1950s–1960s, this charming small-scale decoy represents a stylised red-headed duck, possibly inspired by the Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), a diving duck traditionally found across European wetlands. Its compact dimensions, expressive silhouette and particularly attractive colour combination give this piece a distinctive character. Craftsmanship and Historical Background Wooden duck decoys have a long history in traditional waterfowl hunting, particularly throughout Europe and North America. Originally developed to attract wild ducks to lakes, rivers and marshes, these handcrafted objects eventually became appreciated as examples of folk art and traditional rural craftsmanship. This example reflects the decorative qualities associated with traditional wooden decoy making, combining a simple, beautifully balanced silhouette with expressive hand-painted details. The rounded head is finished in a vibrant deep red, contrasting elegantly with the elongated black bill and softly coloured eyes. The breast is painted in a muted silver-grey tone, while the back and wings feature rich dark green, warm brown, golden yellow and ivory-white decoration. Particularly attractive are the individually painted feather details, with alternating yellow and white brushstrokes creating a lively, almost graphic pattern across the wings. The carved wing outlines add depth to the decoration and emphasise the handcrafted character of the piece. Original Patina and Condition The decoy is preserved in good vintage condition, with its attractive aged patina and natural signs of wear. The painted surface displays subtle marks, minor abrasions, gentle colour variations and visible brushwork consistent with its traditional handcrafted appearance. The red head retains its striking colour, while the contrasting wing decoration remains particularly attractive. The underside is unpainted, revealing the natural wooden surface, visible grain and a warm brown patina. No manufacturer's marks, metal weights or anchoring fittings are visible on the underside. The object is offered in its existing condition, without cleaning, repainting or cosmetic restoration by the present owner. Its natural signs of ageing contribute to its character and decorative appeal. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
