Ear Clips made from Antique Elements with Diamond Roses in Silver

Rose cut diamonds, also known as "rose couronée" or "crowned roses", can already be found in pieces of jewellery from the 16th century; numerous famous diamonds such as the Orloff and the Grand Mogul are designed in this rose cut. It is characterized by the fact that the top of the diamond is faceted in a star shape and the underside is cut flat. This creates a very specific, soft shimmer that is very different from the sometimes garish brilliance of today's diamonds. No fewer than 28 of these special diamonds are gathered together in this pair of earrings, which came to us from the south of Italy. Seven further diamond roses are set around a larger diamond rose in a silver mirror setting, which together form a beautiful blossom. A floral arrangement of foliage and a diamond drop is attached to the blossom. The flowers at the top and the movably mounted pendulums with the diamonds in their silver settings are typical of the workmanship of the first half of the 19th century. The backs of the settings are closed and the irregular shape of the diamonds is transformed into regular outlines by the wide framing. The backs of the settings are smooth, only the larger diamond roses in the center of the flowers are still rounded, as was common in the 18th century. The elements were probably originally part of a larger piece of jewellery such as a necklace. More recently, they have been combined with modern clip mechanisms to create clip earrings. Today, they can be worn without pierced ears.
