- Oil on canvas. Original canvas with an antique lining. On the back, attribution to Jan van Huysum, regarded as the great Dutch still life painter of the 18th century. - The scene unfolds with the meticulous opulence of an early 18th-century Dutch still life, where a panoply of game birds — iridescent-feathered pheasants, teal ducks, and woodcocks — pile up in a waterfall of abundance that seems to inherit the technical preciosity of Jan van Huysum. Yet, the coldness of the still life is broken by the intrusion of the human: a character, with furtive movement and evasive gaze, prepares to steal a partridge from the sumptuous feast, introducing a note of picaresque mischief amid aristocratic solemnity. This tension between static beauty, which Van Huysum would have elevated to the category of botanical or ornithological jewel, and the vulnerability of wealth before the cunning of the dispossessed, makes the work a reflection on the transience and greed. The light, sliding over the dead plumage with scientific precision, also illuminates the transgressive gesture, reminding us that even in the most exquisite order of Dutch painting, the human condition, with its hunger and audacity, always finds a crack through which to raid the feast of the privileged, much to the chagrin of a watchdog. - Image dimensions without frame: 28 x 20 cm / 38 x 30 cm with exclusive custom frame.
