Oil on sturdy cardboard depicting the old town of Antibes and the Grimaldi castle, treated in a decidedly colorful style explicitly referencing neo-impressionism. The composition shows the famous fortified silhouette dominating the coastline, with its simplified architectural volumes and its two strong verticals standing out against a vast blue sky. The artist favors less the minutiae of topographic description than the vibration of Mediterranean light: the surface is built up by a multitude of small juxtaposed touches of blue, pink, mauve, yellow, green and orange, particularly perceptible in the foreground, where they transform the sea and its reflections into a true chromatic mosaic. The shadows themselves are rendered by color rather than by black, while the castle walls take on pink, yellow and orange tones under the effect of light. This claimed technique is explained on the back of the work, which bears the inscription "Hommage à Georges Seurat", clearly establishing the artist’s intention to reconnect with the divisionist and pointillist explorations developed at the end of the 19th century. The painting is signed at the bottom right, the signature remaining difficult to read and not currently allowing a definite attribution. Overall, it constitutes a luminous and very decorative interpretation of an emblematic landscape of the Côte d’Azur, where the Grimaldi castle’s architecture becomes above all the support for an exploration of color, complements and the vibration of light. The work is presented in its original wooden frame (two small chips) whose sober tone particularly enhances the light, Mediterranean palette of the composition. (Text written with the help of AI)
