▲ Edmund de Waal (British, b.1964) a large porcelain footed bowl

circa 1990, glazed in a pale celadon glaze, the rim with a dripped green copper oxide design, impressed 'E' to the base, impressed 'E' to the base, 35cm diameter, 12cm high, Catherine Southon, July 2023, lot 315. English artist and potter Edmund de Waal has 'always loved the idea of the mutability of things...Nothing is forever... There’s an inherent instability about how objects work in space'. Born in Nottingham in 1964, de Waal trained under the prestigious ceramicist Geoffrey Whiting between 1981 and 1983. His pieces act as vessels for the human experience and our world history by blending Japanese and Chinese ceramic traditions with English and medieval techniques and sensibilities. After studying in Japan at the Mejiro Ceramics Studio in Tokyo, he returned to London in 1993 and began experimenting with porcelain rather than his previous use of stoneware, creating objects and forms such as teapots, bottles and jugs. Groupings or 'cargoes' of irregular porcelain receptacles became key to his work, changing in scale over the years. The present porcelain bowl is a classic example of how Edmund de Waal fuses all these influences, ideas and traditions together into one seamless object, appearing as if it has existed for a very long time. Condition Report, Condition Report, This has slightly ‘reduced’ in the firing in places, turning the copper oxide into a rose pink colour. The large bowl has a 3cm hairline crack which is hard to see and may have occurred during the initial firing, rather than mistreatment, but this does affect the bowls ringing qualities, otherwise in very good condition. An adhesive label to the underside. Some surface marks and dirt throughout. Please see additional photographs. Request A Condition Report, Request A Condition Report
