Didactic Anatomical Model of a Hen – SOMSO – Germany – 1930 Important anatomical model of a hen produced by the German manufacturer SOMSO (Marcus Sommer), a house specializing in the fabrication of anatomical, zoological and botanical models for teaching. Founded in Sonneberg in 1876 by Marcus Sommer, SOMSO is one of the historical German manufacturers of scientific and educational models. The model represents a hen at life-size scale, fully polychromed. A part of the body is removable, revealing a particularly detailed representation of the internal anatomy: spine, musculature, trachea, digestive system, internal organs as well as an anatomical section of the head and neck. The different structures are identified by a pedagogical number painted on, intended to be used with an explanatory nomenclature. The model rests on its original green-painted wooden base, with a supporting metal rod. The base bears especially the old SOMSO mark, in the form of a red and white triangular emblem featuring an anatomical figure in the center of the characteristic “SOMSO sun.” This old mark allows attributing the model to the SOMSO manufacturer. An old inventory number is also manually inscribed on the base: “HG-13-03-004” It probably corresponds to the inventory of the scientific or educational establishment in which the model was once used; the establishment is not identified. Origin: Germany – SOMSO / Marcus Sommer Date: mid-20th century, probably around 1940-1960. Good overall condition for an old teaching model that has indeed been used in education. Evidence of use, wear, small chips and losses of polychromy, particularly on some protruding and anatomical parts. Old patina preserved. See detailed photographs for the condition.
