Elegant Art Deco Bar Brooch with Historic Diamonds, ca. 1930

Bar brooches,, pins - all these are names for a form of jewellery that enjoyed great popularity in the first decades of the 20th century. Such a brooch is also the present one, which in the non-color white and abstract composition is a typical piece of jewellery of Art Deco. In the center, the brooch bears two round old European cut diamonds. Interestingly, however, the six diamonds on the sides are older! They are fashioned of an even earlier version of the old cut, the near-rectangular Peruzzi cut, and appear to have been cut as early as the 18th or early 19th century. We can observe this more often in the jewellery of the early 20th century: After all, fashion had changed greatly within just a few years, and numerous pieces of jewellery had become unwearable for fashion-conscious ladies. However, since the new models also required numerous diamonds, these were taken from the heirlooms that had become unfashionable in order to save costs. That the brooch itself was not made until around 1930, however, is evidenced not only by its design but also by the material combination of white gold with a central overlay of platinum. Only in the Art Deco period this combination was used.
