Elegant Pendant with Diamonds & Pearl in Gold & Platinum, c. 1940 & Later

Fine, elegant details in platinum with milgrains, alongside curves and sweeps of polished yellow gold: this pendant shows the full stylistic range of late Art Deco. While cool, elegant, crystalline designs had predominated in the 1920s, they were now joined by expansive, warmly glowing forms, also known in English as "retro style". They dominated jewelry design from the late 1930s right through to the 1950s. A lyre shape in yellow gold forms the basic motif of the pendant. Small agraffes made of platinum and diamonds connect the elements, which become smaller from bottom to top, three times on top of each other. Two further transition-cut diamonds create additional highlights. The real star of this composition shimmers at its lower end: a wonderful, dropshaped saltwater cultured pearl, whose grey tone is overlaid with an iridescent play of colours. Cultured pearls like this did not yet exist in the 1930s. They were therefore obviously only added to the goldsmith's work later. And indeed, a look with a magnifying glass shows that the pin to which it was attached and the eyelet at the upper end were also added to the piece of jewellery in a second step. It is therefore very likely to be part of a bracelet from the 1930s that was only converted into a pendant in recent years. We have added a matching gold chain to the pendant. A versatile piece that can be combined with both Art Deco and Mid-Century pieces of jewellery.
