Episcopal mitre embroidered with coat of arms – in its original box - Late 19th to early 20th century - France or Italy Rare ivory moiré silk episcopal mitre, richly embroidered with multicolored floral motifs and outlined with cords featuring a geometric red, black, and gold pattern. Both lappets are adorned with ecclesiastical coats of arms embroidered, accompanied by the Latin motto “SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM” visible in the photographs. The interior is lined with red silk. The mitre is housed in its substantial original wooden box covered in tawny leather, with a red fabric lining inside and equipped with its brass handle. “Sub tuum praesidium” is a Latin formula meaning: “Under your protection” or, more literally, “Under your safeguarding.” This is particularly the beginning of a very old Marian prayer, Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix… : “Under your protection we take refuge, Holy Mother of God…”. The precise identification of its owner remains to be established. Heraldic research suggests a possible membership in a prothonotary apostolic or in a prelate of the Papal Household, an attribution that still needs to be confirmed. Overall height: 71 cm. Fine overall condition given the age; some tears and signs of use on the interior. The box shows wear, rubbing, and signs of age.
