This pair represents a true rarity on the art market: Appay's technical virtuosity meets monumental dimensions, highly unusual for works on paper. The Artist & Collector Value Émile Appay (Paris, 1876–1935) is recognized as one of the most refined French landscape painters of the early 20th century. Famous for his ability to capture natural light and the luminous atmosphere of the Alps and the Mediterranean, the artist skillfully combines precise underdrawing with fluid, transparent, and vibrant watercolor washes. Exhibitions & Recognition Official Salons: Regularly exhibited at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français in Paris between 1910 and 1920. Historic Parisian Art Galleries: His works were showcased in some of the most renowned galleries in the French capital, including: Galerie Georges Petit (a milestone venue for Impressionism and late 19th/early 20th-century art). Galerie Pierre Le Chevallier. Galerie Jules Gautier. Galerie P. Hénaut (holding major exhibitions between 1928 and 1934). Theatrical Set Design: In the 1920s, he also created stage designs for the famous theater company of Georges Pitoëff. Artwork Analysis 1. "Zilia. Balagne. Corse" Subject: An evocative view of the mountain village of Zilia, nestled in the Balagne region of Corsica. Composition: A dirt path bustling with resting travelers and a figure on a donkey leads the eye toward the village and the majestic rocky peak above, all bathed in a warm, crisp light. Inscriptions: Titled "Zilia. Balagne. Corse." lower left; autographed signature "E. Appay" lower right. 2. "La Scierie. En Savoie" Subject: An imposing Alpine view depicting a historic sawmill in Savoy, surrounded by powerful, untouched nature. Composition: A dynamic scene featuring a rushing stream crossed by a stone bridge, horse-drawn carts loaded with timber, and a backdrop of snow-capped mountains rendered with extraordinary atmospheric subtlety. Inscriptions: Titled "La Scierie. En Savoie." lower left; autographed signature "E. Appay" lower right. Period Frames & Condition Report Frames: Housed in their original period frames (c. 1910–1930), gold-leaf gilded with elegant Rocaille / Salvator Rosa foliage carvings. Measuring an impressive 105 × 80 cm each, they lend a timeless elegance and strong decorative presence. Condition: Paintings: Excellent. Paper and pigments are beautifully preserved, vibrant, and free from significant alterations. Frames: Good antique condition. They display an authentic patina with minor gilding losses and slight abrasions to the gesso ground consistent with age, attesting to their originality without compromising their aesthetic appeal. A rare opportunity to acquire a pair of great historical and artistic merit, ready to elevate high-end private collections or prestigious interiors. Shipping & Safety Note: The artworks are currently protected under glass. To ensure the absolute safety of the paper medium and prevent accidental breakage during transport from damaging the watercolors, the works will be shipped with the glass removed. The period frames and the paintings will be packaged separately with professional care and maximum protection.
