EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE (EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY), State of My Country, 1992

EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE (EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY) Anmatyerre language, 1910 - 1996 State of My Country, 1992 acrylic on canvas 91.5 x 153 cm bears inscription verso: Emily Kngwarreye, Commissioned by Delmore Gallery, NT 0871, 92J034 PROVENANCE Delmore Gallery, Northern Territory, Cat No. 92J034 Coo-ee Aboriginal Art Gallery, New South Wales Robert & Elizabeth Caswell Collection, New South Wales thence by descent Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Coo-ee Aboriginal Art Gallery EXHIBITED The Delmore Collection: Selected Exhibition and Survey of Works 1989-1995, 7 November - 3 December 1995, Mary Place Gallery, Sydney, New South Wales This work by Emily Kame Kngwarreye (Emily Kam Kngwarray) was painted in October 1992, at a significant point in the development of her practice. Here, the underlying linear structures that characterised many of her earlier paintings recede, allowing colour and fields of dotting to take greater prominence across the surface. The work relates to Kngwarreye's Country, Alhalker, and to the plants, foods and seasonal abundance with which she held deep cultural and custodial connections. Across the painting, varied colours evoke the seeds, flowers and fruits that emerge across Country at different stages of growth and transformation. Rather than describing the landscape literally, she builds an expansive field of colour and rhythm which Country is understood as living, changing and interconnected. The subtle variations in the placement, density and colour of the brush work create a sense of movement across the surface. They suggest the transformation of Country following rain, when the desert can shift rapidly from apparent sparseness to extraordinary abundance. Emily Kame Kngwarreye's paintings are inseparable from her knowledge of Country and Anmatyerre cultural life. Awelye, or women's ceremony, was fundamental to her life and practice, encompassing relationships between women, Country, ancestral law and the ongoing care of the natural world. While Emily's paintings came to be celebrated internationally for their remarkable visual power, they remained grounded in the Country, knowledge and cultural responsibilities that shaped her life. © Emily Kam Kngwarray / Copyright Agency, 2026
