Ernst Leyden (1892 -1969) - Zonder titel

This colorful lithograph by Ernst van Leyden from 1967, numbered 16/20, is characterized by a playful interplay of geometric shapes, rhythm, and movement. Against the light paper unfolds a pattern of bright orange planes and yellow, dotted lines that fan outward from different central points. The repeated circular motifs evoke flowers, suns, or turning wheels, while the sharp orange forms give the composition tension and direction. Although the work is completely abstract, it evokes associations with growth, energy, and movement through its clear colors and organic rhythm. The combination of repetition and variation ensures that the eye is continually guided through the image. In this way the lithograph is characteristic of Van Leyden's experimental graphics from the 1960s, in which he gradually let go of figurative work in favor of color, geometry, and visual rhythm. Ernst van Leyden (Rotterdam, 1892 – Versailles, 1969) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist who later worked in America, with a pronounced international life. Together with his wife, the artist Karin Kluth, he traveled and lived in Portugal, London, Paris, and the United States. The couple moved in international artistic and cultural circles and had contacts with, among others, Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, Bertolt Brecht, and Diego Rivera. Metzemakers Kunstmakelaardij After Van Leyden had left the United States in 1940, his work increasingly moved toward abstract compositions and collages. His experimental lithographs from the 1960s, including the series he made at Tamarind, show his interest in geometry, repetition, color, and contemporary printed media. His graphic work is now held, among others, in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art.
