Franz Ertinger was born in 1640 or 1648 in Colmar or Weil am Rhein (Swabia). In 1667, he was in Paris as the king’s engraver. He also went to Rome and stayed long in Antwerp. He died around 1710 in Paris. Twelve of his illustrations are known for the History of the Counts of Toulouse, after Raymond Lafage. Lafage designed the model, but it was Franz Ertinger who oversaw the engraving. It was a commission by the capitouls of Toulouse, aimed at upgrading the town hall. He also collaborated with Raymond Lafage on The Marriage at Cana. Raymond Lafage (Lisle-sur-Tarn, 1656 – Toulouse, 1684) was a French Baroque artist known for his prints and mythological drawings. According to the RKD he was a pupil of Jean-Pierre Rivalz, and in turn taught the painter Antoine Rivalz (the son of Rivalz) and the painter François Boitard. He traveled to Italy to make drawings of Italian masters, and is recorded as working in Toulouse. He planned a second stay in Italy, but died during the journey to Lyon. According to Houbraken he could draw a cleverly complicated version of the Pharaoh entering the Red Sea in two hours, from what appeared to be random scratches on a piece of paper, enough to draw a crowd in a tavern. His pupil Boitard could repeat the trick, but not as well. Houbraken learned of his other works through prints published by Jan van der Brugge, who produced a series titled “Effigies Raymundi la Fage” with engravings by Cornelis Vermeulen, Gérard Audran, Franz Ertinger and Charles Louis Simonneau. This series was later published in Amsterdam in 1785 by Jacob Yntema.
