Escuela emiliana (XVII) - San José con el Niño

Escuela emiliana (XVII) - San José con el Niño

17th-Century Italian School Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus Follower of the painter Guido Reni The piece rests on formal and compositional grounds in the celebrated devotional prototypes created by the Bolognese master during the 1630s. Oil on linen canvas. It presents a generalized, mature, and homogeneous craquelure typical of the organic aging of polymerized binders. The pictorial layer darkened by the oxidation of ancient resin varnishes and accumulated deposits of devotional soot/smoke This work illustrates one of the most exalted and sought-after iconographies of the Counter-Reformation: the dignification of the figure of Saint Joseph as an active and tender protector of Christ’s infancy, distancing itself from the traditional medieval representation that relegated him to a passive or aged role. The patriarch appears half-length, holding the Child Jesus partially wrapped in a white cloth of purity. With a subtle play of light rooted in late Baroque sensibilities, the lily-stem blossom stands out in the background, an attribute that symbolizes chastity and the celestial election documented in apocryphal texts. From a morphological perspective, the canvas faithfully copies the celebrated composition by Guido Reni ("Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus", c. 1635–1640), preserved in institutions such as the Hermitage Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The saint’s facial features—the forehead clear of sharp highlights, the soft modeling of the graying beard, the eyes half-closed in a contemplative attitude—and the nacreous anatomy of the Child emulate the delicate and classic maniera of the Bologna school. The execution reveals the dexterity of a workshop master or a learned copyist of the late seventeenth century, who assimilated the original master’s lighting and adapted it to the devotional needs of private collections of the period. (Study of the catalog raisonné of the original compositions of Saint Joseph with the Child and their dispersion through engravings across Europe). From a private collectio
