Vertical composition featuring a slain rooster as the central figure, placed diagonally on a dark background and almost devoid of spatial references. The animal’s body concentrates all attention through a vigorous, thickly applied and expressive brushstroke, especially evident in the treatment of the feathers. The palette is dominated by blacks, browns, ochres, grays, and cream tones, with small reddish accents on the comb. The lighting strikes the plumage, creating strong contrasts, adding volume to the bird and reinforcing the dramatic character of the scene. The freedom of execution and the dissolution of contours give the composition notable visual strength. The work is presented with a wide gold-painted wooden frame, decorated with stepped moldings and a light inner band. The frame retains an attractive antique patina and shows scuffs, wear, and occasional losses in the gilding, in keeping with its age.
