DESCRIPTION Interesting landscape from a Belgian School, created during the second half of the 20th century, in which an isolated rural building rises within a wide and almost uninhabited territory. The composition is dominated by an extraordinary sky of great extent, treated with broad masses of whites, grays, very diluted blues, and earthy tones. Beneath it unfolds an austere landscape, built with ochres, earth tones, blacks and whites, in which the architecture is reduced to essential forms. The work stands out especially for its material treatment. The artist uses generous impastos, scrapes, drag marks, and applications of paint of varying thickness, making visible the painting’s own materiality and turning the painted surface into a fundamental part of the composition. The result is a landscape with notable decorative presence and character, distant from a strictly naturalistic representation and close to the expressionist and materialist currents developed in Europe during the second half of the 20th century. 3. STYLISTIC AND COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS The composition is organized through a marked contrast between the great atmospheric expanse of the sky and the much more compact and heavy land area. The small architecture located slightly to the left of the central axis functions as the main spatial reference element. From it, paths, dark patches, and terrain irregularities guide the gaze into depth. The pictorial language is deliberately free. The forms are constructed through blotches, incisive lines, and thick impastos, dispensing with meticulous description. Particularly attractive is the combination of almost monochrome areas with very strong black accents. The sky, treated with glazes, scrapes, and broad brushstrokes, generates a sense of atmospheric movement that contrasts with the mineral density of the foreground. This use of color and material links the work to certain tendencies of postwar European painting, where the landscape remains recognizable but becomes a vehicle to explore gesture, texture, and expressivity. 4. PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION The scene conveys a strong sense of silence and isolation. The small scale of the buildings compared to the vastness of the sky reinforces the impression of solitude of the territory and gives the landscape a contemplative dimension. The almost total absence of human figures reinforces this perception. Rather than depicting a specific place, the artist seems to seek an emotional evocation of the landscape: a harsh and silent territory subjected to a changing atmosphere. Earth tones and the presence of large dark masses add gravity to the scene, while the bright whites of the sky introduce a note of openness and depth. 5. SIGNATURE AND AUTHORSHIP HYPOTHESIS No signature is observable on the front that would securely establish the painter’s identity. On the back of the canvas there is a handwritten inscription of some age whose reading is partly uncertain. Prudence in cataloguing prevents proposing a concrete identification of the author based solely on that inscription. According to its technical and stylistic characteristics — gestural brushwork, strong material component, simplification of forms, and expressive treatment of the landscape — the work is catalogued as Belgian School of the second half of the 20th century. This attribution should be understood as a historical-stylistic classification and not as an attribution to a specific artist. 6. OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION Work of considerable visual presence thanks to its dimensions, its pronounced pictorial texture, and the atmospheric breadth of the composition. The use of impastos and scrapes allows for a particularly good appreciation of the artist’s execution when the painting is viewed up close. It is presented framed, with a frame of substantial width that notably enhances the work and allows immediate display. The photographs form an integral part of the description and allow appreciation of both the work and its reverse, structure and condition. 7. SHIPPING AND CONDITIONS The work will be professionally packed by Barcelona Art Gallery. To ensure proper protection during transport, a size-customized box will be used, with specific protective materials and foam reinforcements. We ship worldwide via a professional transport company. The packaging and protection are prepared individually according to the characteristics of each work. We recommend carefully reviewing all photographs, as they form an integral part of the description and show the actual condition of the piece.
