Fabulous Earrings with Rubellite & Grossular by Günter Krauss, Stuttgart

All times have their fashions, and all fashions have their effects on jewellery. Jewelry from the 1980s is an impressive testimony to a time of optimism and abundance: the oil crisis seemed to have been overcome, Wall Street was flourishing. People sipped cocktails and paid by credit card; anything seemed possible. These clip earrings come from the studio of Stuttgart goldsmith Günter Krauss and are unique handmade pieces from those years. The large ear clips made of high-carat gold are set with two large red tourmalines, so-called rubellites, weighing a total of around 25.20 ct. The natural tourmalines are cut into high, cushion-shaped cabochons and display an unusually uniform color with a beautiful inclusion pattern. Attached to them are the actual main protagonists of the composition, as the large green gemstones are extremely rare green garnets, so-called grossulars. This unusual variety of the garnet group owes its name to the Latin word grossularia, meaning "gooseberry", as early specimens with their fresh green coloration were reminiscent of gooseberries. Their vibrant, bright green with interesting inclusions that look like moss forms a fabulous contrast to the warm raspberry tones of the Rubellite. It is precisely this combination of complementary colours that gives the ear clips their extraordinary presence. Krauss has succeeded in placing the unusual gemstones at the center of attention without overloading them with excessive design. The complementary colours reinforce each other's effect.
