This fascinating formation comes from the Brazilian emerald mines in Belmont, where green emerald crystals are naturally embedded in a dark matrix of biotite and altered quartzite. The block has been skillfully polished and carved to enhance the emerald crystals – aggregates and elongated, with an intense, brilliant green that emerges from the matrix like mineral sprouts in primordial soil. Emerald is a variety of beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈), whose green color is due to the presence of chromium, vanadium and, in some cases, iron. It forms under extremely rare geological conditions, in zones where hydrothermal fluids rich in beryllium meet host rocks rich in chromium and vanadium, such as ultramafic schists and serpentinites. In this matrix, the emerald crystals are distributed in a heterogeneous but clearly visible way, with elongated geometries and hexagonal prismatic shapes that stand out against the chromatic contrast of the host rock.
