Femme au fauteuil No. 1 (le Manteau polonais) Pablo Picasso

• Created during Picasso’s intensive exploration of lithography at the Mourlot studio • Françoise Gilot is wearing the characteristic ‘Manteau polonais’, which Picasso brought back for her from his trip to Poland in 1948 • The later Impression documents Picasso’s experimental development of the motif through repeated transfer and reworking of the composition Picasso continually reworks the portrait of Françoise Gilot seated in an armchair across several Impressions. Particular emphasis is placed on the so-called ‘Manteau polonais’ – a sheepskin-lined, colourfully embroidered leather coat that Picasso brought back for Gilot in 1948 from his trip to Poland. Its wide sleeves and ornamental design characterise the composition and become the starting point for Picasso’s interplay with surface and line. The print thus combines a highly personal motif with his experimental work in the medium of lithography. | 1881 Málaga - Mougins bei Cannes 1973 | Moderne Kunst | Druckgrafik | Nummer: 26x2157 | Provenance: Privatsammlung, Süddeutschland.
