Figural mantel clock - Empire schouwklok van gepatineerd...

Elegant Empire mantel clock, crafted from finely chiseled patinated and fire-gilded (mercury gilded) bronze. The clock is crowned by a depiction of the sleeping Cupid, lying on a classical resting bed. The architecturally designed case is richly decorated with fluted pilasters, Greek meander bands, crossed arrows with intertwined snakes, winged griffins flanking a Medici vase and refined neoclassical ornaments. The white enamel dial is signed Alexandre à Paris, a Paris clockmaker who was active in the early 19th century. The clock is fitted with the original silk thread hanging mechanism (fil de soie) and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. A refined and representative example of French decorative art from the Empire period, dating to about 1805–1810. The photos form an integral part of the description.
