Figure - Rare large Japanese red lacquer Foo Dogs - Wood - Japan

Rare large Japanese red lacquer Foo Dogs (Shishi) – Meiji period – Monumental pair **shipping to the United States is not available for this lot** A very rare and impressive large pair of Japanese red lacquer Foo Dogs (Shishi) from the Meiji period (1868–1912). These monumental guardian lions are finely carved and lacquered in deep red and black tones, with powerful facial expressions, expressive glass eyes and richly modelled manes and tails. The quality of carving, sculptural presence and lacquer finish place this pair well above standard decorative examples. These are high-quality decorative and collectible works of art, intended for a prestigious interior or collection. Comparable examples of this exceptional type have appeared in major international auctions. The style and execution are strongly reminiscent of a Meiji-period Foo Dog sold at Bonhams and attributed to Kōgyoku, underlining the artistic level of these sculptures (comparison only, no direct attribution implied). The pair is well matched and forms an impressive symmetrical set, traditionally symbolising protection, strength and prosperity. Condition Very good condition for lacquer work of this age. There are age-related signs of wear, minor surface losses and patina, which are normal and expected for Meiji lacquer objects. No major breaks or structural damage. The figures are complete, stable and visually impressive. Shipping & Disclaimer The sculptures will be carefully packed and shipped with professional materials. Due to the size, weight and fragile lacquer surface of these objects, we strongly recommend using a professional art transport company (such as Easy2Send) to minimise the risk of damage during transit. Interested bidders are welcome to request an indicative transport quote during the auction, so costs are clear in advance. The buyer is responsible for all transport costs. These costs are to be paid directly to us, after which we will arrange and settle the payment with the transport company on the buyer’s behalf. If the buyer prefers standard shipping arranged by us, this is possible at the buyer’s risk. Collection in person or organising one’s own transport service is also possible by appointment. Due to current import tariffs and regulations, shipping to the United States is not available for this lot. We ship internationally within Europe and to selected other countries. Please inquire before bidding if you are unsure whether shipping to your country is possible.
