[First Edition] Headwaters of the Mississippi Glazier

Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Company, 1893. Willard Glazier (1841-1905) wrote of his escape from captivity in the Civil War, and it was a best-seller. His subsequent career, however, was scandalous, and he wa more than a bit of a con-man. What can believed about this expedition is uncertain; it was denounced by contemporary geographers. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Bound in green cloth; decorated in gilt and silver with a map of "Lake Glazier." Titling in gilt on the spine, featuring a Native American in a canoe. Clean text; 527 pages. Frontis illustration and many others within. Beveled edges. Starting on Page 408 is "An Appendix Concerning the True Source of the Mississippi" by Pearce Giles. There is a chp to the head of the spine and an ink stain to the fore-edge page ends, not affecting the textblock. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
