[First Edition] Rommel. YOUNG, Desmond. [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]

YOUNG, Desmond. Rommel. London: Collins, 1950. First UK edition, first impression. Octavo. 288 pp., with photographic plates, maps and map endpapers; foreword by Field-Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck. An important early post-war biography of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel by a British officer who had himself been captured during the Battle of Gazala in 1942 and briefly encountered Rommel. Published only six years after Rommel's death, Young's book helped shape the post-war image of the German commander and was subsequently used as a principal source for the 1951 film The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel. The 1950 Collins edition is bibliographically recorded at 288 pages and includes material relating to Rommel's North African campaign of 1941-43. The foreword by Auchinleck, one of Rommel's principal British opponents in the Western Desert, gives the volume particular historical interest. The present copy is in notably attractive condition: binding nice and tight, publisher's cloth bright and clean, pages generally nice and clean. The original pictorial dustwrapper is very good, slightly nicked, chipped and rubbed at the extremities with light general wear, but bright and substantially complete. Now housed in an easily removable clear acetate sleeve. Near fine in a very good original dustwrapper. Stock code 004183. Location: Bookroom.
