[First Edition] The Master and Margarita Mikhail Bulgakov

[First Edition] The Master and Margarita Mikhail Bulgakov

First American edition. Translated from the Russian by Michael Glenny. Original black cloth binding with gilt and red text on spine. Dust-jacket with Mercer Mayer's art on the cover shows wear and very minor tearing at edges; price is clipped. Some scuffing, spotting, and dirt on dust-jacket, including inner flaps. Pages are toned but unmarked. Spotting on bottom edges of pages. This novel was written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940, and has since been published in several languages and editions. It satirizes Russian bureaucracy and atheism. The story concerns a visit by the devil and his entourage to the officially atheist Soviet Union. The devil, manifested as one Professor Woland, challenges the Soviet citizens' beliefs about religion and condemns their behavior throughout the book. The Master and Margarita combines supernatural elements with satirical dark comedy and Christian philosophy, defying categorization within a single genre. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satire. Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov (1891-1940) was a Russian and Soviet novelist and playwright. Hardcover, very good condition. 394 pages, octavo.
