Floral Gold Brooch with Natural Pearls, Great Britain c. 1900

Floral Gold Brooch with Natural Pearls, Great Britain c. 1900

Jewellery made of yellow gold and studded all over with natural seed pearls was particularly popular in Great Britain around 1900. Figural brooches in a wide variety of shapes were particularly popular. Just how varied the designs were can be seen in the advertisement for the London Goldsmith & Silversmith Company from 1901 shown here, which depicts a brooch under the number 21,359 that is very similar to the one shown here. The piece of jewellery appears as a blossoming branch with leaves and flowers of various shapes. Numerous natural pearls adorn the leaves of a fully blossomed flower, in the center of which a somewhat larger pearl shimmers. A single pearl in turn forms a small bud. In the lightness of its design, the brooch thus adapted to the changing fashion, which after years of heavy, dark fabrics now favored pastel colours and softly flowing cuts. Typical of the time, the brooch, which is made of gold, is also finely gold-plated to achieve the particularly sought-after, rich yellow-gold sheen. We discovered the floral greeting in London.
