Folding screen with Tale of Genji scenes - Lacquered wood

An intricate tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari). The composition presents several episodes from the classical Heian-period narrative, unfolding within an elegant landscape populated with blossoming cherry and plum trees, mature pines and young saplings, all enveloped by sweeping gold leaf cloud banks. Along the right side is a scene from Chapter 23, Hatsune 初音 (“First Song of Spring”). Set on New Year’s Day at the Rokujô estate, Genji, now thirty-six years old, visits Lady Murasaki and the Akashi Princess in the spring quarters. From her residence in the winter quarter, the Akashi Lady sends a seasonal gift of baskets filled with flowers and fruit. Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims, a slender blue inner band and a broader green outer border. The panels are set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal corner mounts. Period: Japan – Mid 19th century (Bakumatsu period) Dimensions: Total width 367.8 cm (2 × 62.5 cm, 4 × 60.7 cm); Height 166.2 cm Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition, with wear and restorations consistent with age on both sides, including some repapering to the reverse.
