FORREST (Thomas). A Voyage to the Moluccas and New Guinea, undertaken aboard the galley *La Tartare* in 1774, 1775, and 1776, by order of the English Company. Paris, Hôtel de Thou, 1780. In-4, marbled calfskin, triple gilt rule, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with a large fold-out map and 28 copperplate engravings depicting views, objects, boats, and plants. An interesting travel account of Indonesia. A glossary of the Magindano (Maguindanao) language and a few terms from the Papuan language are found on pp. 443–458. (Chadenat, no. 571.) The copy bears the signature of Gaston de Roquemaurel (1804–1878) on the title page, a naval officer and explorer from Toulouse who notably served as Dumont D’Urville’s first mate during the Astrolabe’s second circumnavigation (1837–1840). Light water stains, especially at the beginning of the volume where the title page is damaged. Worn binding (leather worn thin and damage to the top cap). Pinholes on the edges.
